The Moment Midas Joined Our Family

This story really isn’t mine to share because as you know dog is man’s best friend, and that statement reigns true in our household. While I am Midas’ mommy and love him unconditionally, Grant will always be his master, daddy, and best friend. Their bond is undeniable. Midas would follow Grant to the ends of the earth, and some days, I believe Grant would follow Midas. So even though, it wasn’t my idea to bring Midas into our family, I will do my best to retell the moment Midas joined our family.

Back in October 2015, Grant and I had been dating four months. At this point, if he would proposed, I would have said yes. When I knew he was the one, I had nothing standing in my way. Grant, on the other hand, had a list of to-dos before being ready. One was getting a dog. He told me he needed to have a house and a dog before getting married. I never understood why we couldn’t just get a dog together, but I’ve learned over time, you can never rush a man.

So in December 2015, we planned a trip to Virginia for Christmas so I could meet his family for the first time. When his parents asked Grant what he wanted for Christmas, he said, “A dog.” His hopes were high! He kept listening to see if he could hear a puppy whine in the garage that night. I remember every present he opened, believing it would reveal some clue as to where the dog was. When he opened his Christmas card from his stocking, I knew he was secretly disappointed. There would be no dog that day.

His parents, in their wisdom, had given him money for a dog instead of the dog itself. They wanted Grant to pick out the dog and bond with it immediately. Also, we had a 22 hour drive home, so I’m thankful that did not include a puppy.

Only minutes after receiving his puppy funds, Grant was on the internet searching for a puppy near our hometown in Kansas. By the end of the day, Grant had found our now beloved pup in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was born November 9, 2015. His name would be Midas, after the king with the golden touch.

So on January 9, 2015, our new family member was ready to be picked up at 11:30 a.m.. Due to excitement, we showed up an hour early. To pass time, we tried to go on a walk, but the winds were fierce and the air frigid, so walking didn’t last long. We were near a restaurant, so at 11:00, Grant and I went in to grab a quick bite before our new member showed up. The restaurant was bare, and even though we ordered food, we were too exhilarated to eat. Stuffing down our lunch, at 11:25, we rushed back to the jeep in hopes to see the owner arrive. A couple minutes later, we saw a white truck pull up. Grant recognized the owner, a tall, stout man, and we hurried out to meet him. The owner opened his back door to show us the box of puppies. Grant’s face lite up like fireworks on the 4th of July. Within seconds, Grant got Midas within his arms. We paid the man, and got back in the jeep to take our sweet boy home.

On the ride home, Midas kept looking in the back of the jeep for his brothers and sisters. It was truly heartbreaking, but I’m sure the amount of love and cuddles he received that day was worth it. We took a couple stops along the way so he could use the bathroom or run and play. He couldn’t really run at this point, but his hops across the open fields were magical.

Since that day, Midas has been one of the biggest blessings in our lives. We thank God every day for his life. He radiates so much joy and fun. There isn’t a ball he can’t fetch. He is the best comforter and loves on us at all times. He is such a good big “brother” to his cat “sisters,” and I hope one day he will get to experience being a big brother to a little human. Through this story, I’m reminded that sometimes in life, we think we are ready for God’s blessing, but God says, “Not yet. I have something better.”

Midas is our something better.
